Artist's Comments

Thirteen years down the road, here's my digital reworking of The Lilypad Deva. I feel I have finally captured the story I wanted to tell in the original watercolor painting, that of a celestial deva/princess sitting on a lilypad while behind her a mystical city such as those found in the archipelagoes of South-East Asia glistened in the moonlight. The shimmering roofs are inspired by the stories which inspired me, of ancient cities fabled to be so rich that the roofs were made of gold.

The original painting is almost completely painted over apart from some bits here and there; the canvas has been enlarged substantially. Apart from the dodge tool and the using of different brush sizes, textures and strengths, no additional filters in Photoshop were used.

Love it, and the almost-leadlight effect you've got going on here. I confess to liking the original name better, only because Princess is kind of a boring, Western word that suggests safe sanitised fairytales, whereas Deva evokes the Indian-oriental roots of it more perfectly, but that's probably just me ;)

Glad you like it :glomp: although, in the old stories I am referencing "princess" would really be more appropriate, hence the change! The one I was thinking of in particular when I was painting it all those years ago was the Princess of Mount Ophir. This isn't her, but is supposed to represent one of those types of deva-princesses, patrician as they are.

`ta ;) It's actually a sarong and I was playing with it being kinda a hybrid between a kain pelekat and a batik thingie but with some gold thread which means it's also got some songket elements. And have I confused you yet with chattering about malay weaving techniques? :p
